Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose Dan Smith?...

Can I see samples of your images from previous weddings?
A small selection of wedding photographs can be found in my online wedding gallery. I am happy to show more examples as prints and higher resolution files before you commit to a booking.

What area do you cover?
I will work anywhere in West Yorkshire and the surrounding area without charging extra for travel. The surrounding area includes Skipton, Harrogate, York, Selby and Barnsley.

Do you have an assistant?
I do not employ a regular assistant but hire them on a freelance basis. I always choose assistants who are capable of taking professional quality photographs.

How much experience do you have?
I got my first SLR camera when I was 13 and have been photographing ever since. I have studied and achieved an HND in photography and have been photographing weddings since summer 2006.

Have you shot a wedding at my location before?
If you decide to book me for a location I am not familiar with, I will take time to visit the location, meet the relevant staff members and search out the best locations for photography.

What type/style of pictures do you take?
I specialise in reportage style photography although it can consist of a mixture of traditional, contemporary, formal, informal, set-up poses and candid shots.

Can you work from a checklist that we create?
I will provide a checklist for the bride and groom to fill in but I am happy to use one they provide instead.

Do we meet the photographer who turns up on the day?
I am a Sole Trader and do all my own photography. I meet all clients before any bookings are made.

How long are you available on the day?
You can book me for as long as you like on your wedding day. I will always keep the rest of the day free in case you decide that you need me for longer at the last minute.

What equipment do you use?
I currently use a professional quality Nikon D3 with a range of lenses and accessories.

Do you have backup equipment and is it the same quality as the primary equipment?
I always have a Nikon Df as a back-up camera just in case. This is also a professional quality camera.

How many pictures do you take?
If I am hired for the whole day I would expect to take over 1000 images. The average client receives around 400.

When will the photographs be available?
A disk of proofs will be ready in about two weeks after the wedding.

Do you perform any digital manipulation?
I can remove spots, reduce wrinkles and even make you look a little slimmer. I can take out objects from the background but I can’t remove a wall to see what’s behind it!

What is on the CD/DVD we get?
You will receive all the images as low resolution jpeg files on CD and high resolution jpeg files on DVD. The images on the DVD will be ready for you to print. If you want any alterations to these images I will do so free of charge for the first 50 then £1 for each additional image. (See question above).

Who owns the copyright?
All images I produce are Copyright © Dan Smith. I grant permission for clients to use any images I provide them with for personal use only. These images can be copied and printed by the client for friends and relatives. Anyone wishing to publish or sell them must seek written permission from me beforehand.

What happens if you can’t get to the wedding?
In the unlikely event that I am too ill or unable to attend for some other reason, I will do all I can to find a replacement photographer with similar style and ability. If they have higher prices than me, I will make up the difference.

How much do you charge?
